When Is Pride Month In India

LGBTQ Pride History and Celebrations in India

Pride Parades and Events

India has been home to vibrant and colorful Pride parades in recent years. The first Pride walk in the country was held in Kolkata in 1999, and since then, Pride events have become more prevalent in major cities across the nation.

Today, Pride parades in India are characterized by a lively atmosphere, with thousands of participants taking to the streets to celebrate their identities and advocate for equality.

Annual Celebrations

In addition to Pride parades, India also hosts several annual events dedicated to the LGBTQ community. One such event is the LGBT Pride Carnival in Nagpur, Maharashtra, which has been held since 2018 as part of Pride Month celebrations.

Another important annual event is LGBT History Month, which is celebrated in October. During this month, organizations across the country host workshops, discussions, and film screenings to raise awareness about LGBTQ history and culture.

National Recognition

In 2012, the National Commission for Minorities declared July 2nd as a day to celebrate LGBTQ History Month. This recognition marked a significant step forward for the LGBTQ community in India.

Additionally, National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11th. This day is an opportunity for individuals to come out as LGBTQ+ and share their stories with the world.
